Army To Get 100+ ‘army sky strikers’ For Balakot – Type Missions from Bengaluru
The drone better’s situational awareness, survivability and performance by allowing special forces and maneuverable troops to harness its direct-fire aerial-precision capabilities.
The Indian Army, under emergency procurement powers, has signed a contract for over 100 explosive-laden drones – which will be manufactured in Bengaluru by a joint venture (JV) led by Alpha Design, with Israeli firm Elbit Security Systems (ELSEC) is included. BENGALURU: The Indian Army, under emergency procurement powers, has signed a contract for over 100 explosive-laden drones – to be manufactured in Bengaluru – to be used as force multipliers in Balakot type missions. Its range will be about 100 km.
The requirement of what the army calls an “infiltrating warship” would be met by ‘sky striker’.
The drones will be manufactured and supplied by a joint venture (JV) led by Bengaluru-headquartered company Alpha Design that includes Israeli firms Elbit Security Systems (ELSEC). The contract signed on Wednesday is worth around Rs 100 crore.
The emergency powers pertain to the acquisition of weapons, ammunition, procurement of critical spares, and other operationally critical equipment which aims to permanent enhancement of operational capabilities of the Indian Armed forces.
Decoding Sky Striker Drones
According to Elbit Security Systems, the Sky Striker is a cost-effective ‘revolving weapon’ capable of long-range penetration attacks.
Military drones have direct-fire air-precision capabilities for maneuvering troops and special forces. The UAV acts like a ‘suicide drone’, which crashes into the target with explosives. In addition, the drone can detect, capture and strike specified targets with a 5 kg warhead installed inside the fuselage. Its electric propulsion provides a much-needed minimal acoustic signature, allowing covert operation at low altitudes – making it silent, invisible and surprising attacker.
Specifically, the Global Positioning System (GPS) would be loaded onto the strike drone prior to launch and, upon launch, it would fly around the location, pick up the target, relay the information back to ground control equipment, and be cleared. Will strike after that. It is worth mentioning that ground control can also change targets after launch, and can even recall if a mission has to be aborted.
The ‘suicide drone’ as some describe it – as it crashes into a target with explosives – is an autonomous system that with a 5 kg warhead installed inside the fuselage can detect targets specified by the operator, achieving can attack and its electric propulsion provides a minimal acoustic signature, allowing covert operation at low altitudes, making it silent, invisible and surprising attacker.

Col (retd) HS Shankar, CMD, Alpha Design, told TOI: “Location details (GPS) will be loaded onto the drone before launch. Upon launching, it will hover around the area, pick up the target, relay the information back to ground control equipment and strike only after getting clearance. Ground control can change targets after the launch, and even call it back in case a mission has to be aborted.”
The Alpha-Elbit JV has already exported about 100 such drones — manufactured based on Elbit’s technology — and has orders for another 100 exports. Alpha owns 51% in the JV. Radars & Friend-Foe Finder Aside from the army contract for its JV, Alpha Design has independently bagged two more defence contracts from the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the past week.
The first six are for very high frequency (VHF) radar. IAF already has Long Range Surveillance Radars P18 Radar – which can capture targets over 200 km, was purchased in the 1980s and 1990s. Given their age, the IAF was looking into whether it should upgrade the P18 or buy new ones at the same price and decided to buy new ones.
Under emergency procurement powers, the IAF issued EOIs and RFPs, which received responses from four companies: defense PSU BEL and three private firms Alpha Design, Astra Microwave and Data Pattern. While all the four firms fulfilled the technical requirements, Alpha emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) and bagged the Rs 200+ crore contract signed last week.
Second, there is also an IAF contract, for the identification of about 60 friend-or-foe (IFF) systems, which will be integrated with ground radars. This technology was developed by the Center for Airborne Systems (CABS) DRDO and transferred to three firms: Alpha, BEL and Data Patterns.
All of them had built the prototype which was approved by the concerned authorities, but Alpha emerged as the L1 firm to bag the Rs 80+ crore contract signed on Sunday.

He said that ground control can change the target after launch and can also recall it in case the mission is aborted.
