  A major hurdle in the way of defense candidates after clearing the written test like CDS and NDA, AFCAT is the SSB interview which is conducted by the respective military institutes – Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

5 Days Complete SSB Interview Process

  Candidates who clear the written examinations like CDS, NDA, TA, INET and AFCAT are called for SSB interview by the respective military boards.  Shortlisted Direct Entries – TES, TGC, UES, SSC Tech etc. can also appear for SSB Interview.

  Thereafter the selected students will have to appear before the Service Selection Board for Intelligence and Personality Test.

  The SSB interview is directed to screen a candidate with 15-character traits called “Officer Like Qualities”.  Mechanism to check done by the following procedure:

  Manasa (which means thought; for this psychological tests are done)

  Vacha (meaning speech; interview conducted for this)

  Karma (meaning karma or action; group test is done for this).

Brief about SSB

Services Selection Board (SSB) conducts interviews for selection of suitable candidates for training to the post of Commissioned Officers in all the three forces.  It is a comprehensive 5-day process divided into two phases after which the recommended candidates undergo a medical examination.  All instructions for bringing documents along and dress code etc. are in the call-up letter available at joinindianarmy.nic.in and candidates are expected to strictly follow all the guidelines.

  There is no language barrier as candidates can speak in Hindi/English or a mixture of both but not any other language.

Day 1 (screening):

  The first-day consists:

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR Test – Paper 1 & Paper 2)
  • Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT)

Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR Test):

The first day comprises the ‘Officer Intelligence Rating Test’ which consists of verbal and non-verbal tests.  Aspirants get two booklets containing 40 questions each.  The time allotted for each booklet is 15- 17 minutes.

Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT):

This test can be further classified as:

    Image Perception: An image is displayed for a time duration of 30 seconds and candidates are required to note down its details like gender, age and mood of the characters, action taken by them.  After that candidates make a story based on that image in a duration of 4 minutes.

    Group Discussion: A group of 10-15 candidates are formed from the batch and each candidate has to tell his/her story and then discuss in the group, so that consensus can be reached.

Day 2 Testing

  The second phase of testing takes place over the next three days and ends with the conference on the fifth day.

  Day-2: Psychology Test

  Dress Code: Formal Dress

It will consist of four tests immediately followed one after the other as following:

  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): Candidates have to write stories based on 11 pictures and at the end a blank slide (12 in total) is shown to them in the form of a slide show.  They will be given four and a half minutes to write each story.
  • Word Association Test (WAT): Candidates should write the sentence/phrase/related word as they feel suitable on 60 words with 15 seconds available to write the response for each word.
  • Situation Reaction Test: Candidates have to write responses on 60 situations in a total allotted time of 30 minutes.
  • Self Description Test (SDT): Candidates should write five paragraphs under the following headings:
  • What my parents think of me
  • What my teachers think of me / teacher’s opinion
  • What my friends think of me / friend’s opinion
  • What do I think of myself / my strengths / Self Opinion
  • What do I want to improve about myself/Improvement needed/weakness in myself.

Day 3 (Group Testing – I):

The third day includes group testing.  Several external tests are conducted here where candidates need to participate in groups.  This day includes the following group tests:

Group Description:

  Group discussion is organized on two topics one after the other on some current events or social issues.  Discussions are usually of 20-30 minutes each.

Group Planning Exercise (GPE):

Here candidates are placed in groups of 10 – 15 people and then given a story based on a model with some issues.  Candidates need to identify the issues and provide a practical solution for the same.

Progressive Group Task (PGT):

The candidates are required to collectively overcome 4 given obstacles in a group, for which they are given a weightage along with some supporting material and some rules.

Group Hurdles (GOR):

Commonly known as the Snake Race, each group is required to compete against the other group for 6 odds.

Half Group Task (HGT):

This exercise is similar to PGT, but it is conducted on a single hurdle with a smaller group.

Day 4 (Group Trial – II):

  This day is again dedicated to Group Testing.  On this day the following tests are done:


  Each candidate is presented with 4 topics from which he has to choose one and speak on it for a duration of 3 minutes.

  Individual Constraints (IO):

  Each candidate is required to clear 10 given obstacles in a time period of 3 minutes, marked from 1-10 depending on the difficulty level.

  Command Task (CT):

  Each candidate is made a commander and given a hurdle similar to HGT which he needs to overcome with the help of his subordinates.

  Final Group Task (FGT):

  The entire group is regrouped and required to complete the assigned task similar to the PGT in the stipulated time.

Personal interview

The Personal Interview can be conducted on any one of the three days after the end of the test on that day.  Based on the data given by the student in his PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire), the interviewing officer will ask the student various questions based on his/her family, academics, participation in sports and extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests, responsibilities, forces including general knowledge, personal  asks.  life, etc.  The interview time is mostly 40 minutes, although it can extend to an hour for some or even five minutes for some.  Some of the most frequently asked questions are:

  • Name of the place you come from?
  • Institute where did you get your education?
  • Your 10th Marks?
  • Favorite subject in class 10th?
  • Favorite teacher in class 10th, why?
  • The teachers you didn’t like in class 10th, why?
  • Your 12th Marks?
  • Favorite subject in class XII?
  • Favorite teacher in class XII, why?
  • The teachers you didn’t like in class 12th, why?
  • Any competitive exam after 12th, what was the result?
  • Your graduation % age / 12th percentile?

Conference day

  Dress Code: Formal Dress

  • Last day of Phase-2 testing.  Candidates pack their bags, have breakfast, collect their belongings in the shed and sit in the waiting room for their turn.  In the conference room all the evaluators sit together and discuss whether a candidate is suitable for recommendation based on his/her performance in all tasks and if there is any doubt they further question him/her during the conference.  Of course almost the same questions are asked in cases involving their stay, tests, food and all, any suggestions etc.

After this the results are declared and recommended candidates have to stay for medical examination while others are sent home.
