Indian Navy Participates In Naval Exercise Malabar 2021

Named ‘Naval Exercise Malabar 2021,’ the 25th edition of the annual exercise will take place in Guam from August 26-29

The Indian Navy on Wednesday laid out the details of this year Malabar Exercise, which is scheduled to take place from August 26 to 29. The 2021 edition of the naval drills, its 25th, is called “Naval Exercise Malabar 2021.”

Exercise from the Indian Navy US Navy (USN), Japanese Marine Self-defense Force (JMSDF) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN), exercising in the ocean phase of Malabar 2021.

In the partnership of the Navy, INS Shivalik and INS Kadmat and Rear Admiral Tarun Sobti, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Includes P8 Eye Patrol Aircraft under the leadership of Eastern Fleet.

Marlabar series of sea practice began as an In-USN practice in 1992. In 2015, JMSDF joined Malabar as a permanent member. Royal Australian Navy participation was seen in 2020 edition. This year, the 25th edition of Malabar is being organized by USN in Western Pacific.

In the ships, departing from Guam, where he participated in operating turn from August 21-24. During this phase, Flag Officer Commanding-In-Chief, Eastern Navy Command Vice Adam AB Singh, AVSM, VSM exchange ideas with counterparts in the US Navy.

Malabar-21 will have complex exercises including anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare exercises and other maneuvers and tactical exercises.

 The exercise will provide an opportunity to the participating navies to benefit from each other’s expertise and experiences.

Indian Navy participation includes INS Shivalik and INS Kadmat and P8I patrol aircraft led by Rear Admiral Tarun Sobti, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.  The US Navy will be represented by USS Barry, USNS Rappahannock, USNS Big Horn and P8A patrol aircraft. 

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force will be represented by JS Kaga, Murasame and Shiranui, in addition to a submarine and P1 patrol aircraft.  The Royal Australian Navy will be represented by HMAS Warramunga.

  The conduct of the exercise while adhering to health protocols during the COVID-19 global pandemic is a testimony to the synergy between the participating navies and our shared vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

The US Navy will be represented by USS Barry, USNS Rappahanock, USNS Big Horn and P8A patrol aircraft. Japanese marine self-defense force will be represented by a submarine and P1 patrol aircraft, JS Kaga, Murasam and Shiranui.

The Royal Australian Navy will be represented by HMAS Warramunga.

 “The exercise will provide an opportunity to the participating navies to benefit from each other’s expertise and experiences,” the Defense Ministry said.

Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said, “Malabar-21 will be a high-speed exercise between destroyers, warships, corvettes, submarines, helicopters and long-range maritime patrol aircraft from the participating navies.”

 “Complex surface, sub-surface and air operations during the exercise, including live weapon firing drills, anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare exercises, and joint maneuvers and tactical exercises,” he said.

 The naval exercise will also provide an opportunity for like-minded navies to mutually benefit from each other’s experiences.

The interoperability achieved over the years as a result of such exercises has proved to be operationally beneficial to provide a conducive environment for stability and economic prosperity in the region,” the Navy said.

Following India’s invitation, Australia participated in the Malabar exercise last year, which effectively made it an exercise by all four member states of the Quad. “Initiated in the year 1992, Malabar was traditionally conducted between the Indian and US navies.  The IN-US bilateral exercise initially succeeded in a tripartite exercise with the participation of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and grew in stature with Australia joining the group in 2020,” said a Navy official said.
