The General Ability Test consists of 150 questions from English, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.

As I managed to crack the exam in my first attempt, I will share some tips and strategies that will make your job a little easier.

The official notification released by UPSC contains the complete syllabus for the written exam.  Go through it and then skim through the questions asked in the previous year (question papers available on UPSC website) so that you can make a list of what topics to study.  This is a very important step as it saves a lot of time for exam preparation and you can avoid reading the useless part.  Example: Sections like Ancient History are rarely asked in the exam so you can plan to avoid such topics and dedicate time for high scoring subjects like Modern History, Famous Govt.  plans, etc.  same goes for maths subjects

Especially for the Mathematics section, read all the definitions of Class XI-XII as many questions have been asked in the recent past from basic domains of functions, definitions of words etc.  For this, you can make various lists of formulas on a sheet of paper.  Like all the integration formulas and stick it on a wall near your study table and do the same for inverted triangles, probability, etc.

Try to thoroughly read at least IX and X Science, History and Geography books for the GAT section. Also if there are no earlier classes then many questions are asked directly from the books.

Many of the first attempts are also in their board year, so I would not recommend reading the newspaper for the general knowledge section.  You can see the editorial for SSB preparation but follow the trend for written preparation.  If you look at the PYQs carefully you will see that some topics like Military Exercises, Awards, Defense Deals/Equipment, Railway Sector, New Government Schemes, Family Planning etc. are asked almost every time.  So select such topics and search it . Exam Study Material where all this is provided in a concise manner.

Some of you might be preparing for the JEE or NEET exam and know that you have to solve almost all the questions in order to rank well.  But in the NDA exam the final rank rarely matters once you enter the academy.  One aspect in which the NDA exam becomes difficult is the negative marking and that too one third of the marks are given for the correct question.  So candidates should focus on accuracy first and then develop speed.  For example: If you are weak in maths and solve only 50 questions out of 120 in MAT with 100 percent accuracy then you will easily clear the sectional cutoff.

Check Cut Off Marks:

Previous Year Cut Off Marks gives a very good idea about your preparation.  The Cut Off Marks tells you about the level of competitiveness of the exam and helps you to prepare a proper strategy for the same.  There are sectional cut off marks for each paper along with the total cut off in the NDA exam.  A candidate needs to score at least 25% marks in each paper (Mathematics and GAT).

This means you have to score at least 150 and 75 marks in GAT and Mathematics paper respectively.

Tip 4- Learn Time Management Skills and Increase Your Speed

A smart strategy can go a long way in helping you crack the NDA exam on time.  Do not try to solve long questions first as it will lower your confidence.  In the case of the Maths test, try to complete each question individually in minimum 1 minute 25 seconds and maximum 3 minutes for short to long questions.

In the case of the GK exam, try to spend at least 1 minute.  Up to 2 minutes maximum.  In the case of an English test, it is necessary to qualify the NDA exam for proficiency in English.  Your good grammatical skills and English proficiency will help you solve the exam quickly in just a few minutes.

With effective time management skills, you will be able to complete your paper on time.  Along with better time management, you should also increase the speed of solving questions in the NDA exam.  And, the increased speed depends only on the practice hours you spend while preparing for the exam.

The last thing that can finalize your NDA exam preparation is “Practice, Practice and Practice”, because “Practice is the key to success”.  Repeated practice brings confidence in the students and clarity in their basic concepts.  Try reading newspapers, English books, novels, magazines etc regularly to enhance your communication skills as well as improve your vocabulary.
