Individuals join the Indian Army as officers at the rank of lieutenant and then earn their streaks over the years to progress to captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, brigadier, major general, lieutenant-general and general.

  Indian Army has a website joinindianarmy.nic.in which helps the candidates to join as an Officer or Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) or other rank depending on the merit and qualification of the candidates.

After the COVID19 pandemic, many defense examinations and SSB interviews were affected, delay in exam notification, SSB interview and induction of cadets in the academy.  Slowly and steadily we are coming back on track and here we are going to talk about some entries through which you can join the Indian Army this year.

Becoming an officer in the Indian Army is considered one of the most respected and prestigious professions.  Serving the nation as an army officer is a dream that millions of Indians aspire to every year.

National Defense Academy:

 NDA vacancies come twice a year for 300 candidates out of which 195 join the Indian Army.  NDA candidate age should be between 16.5 years to 19.5 years and educational qualification should be 10+2.

Technical Entry Scheme (TES) 10+2 :

Candidates who have passed the 10+2 CBSE/ICSE/State Board Exam with minimum 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are eligible to apply for commission under 10+2 (TES).  On succeeding in SSB and declared fit by the Medical Board, they undergo one year basic military training at the training academy and thereafter three years engineering degree course in the relevant stream before obtaining permanent commission.  On commissioning, they are given one year training after commissioning for the arm/service in which they are commissioned.

Indian Military Academy (Non-tech):

 The Indian Army recruits 250 candidates twice a year.  Applicants age should be between 19 to 24 years and should graduate from a recognized university.

Short Service Commission (Non-Tech):

 Twice a year there are 175 vacancies per course, in which applicants must be between 19 to 25 years of age and must be a graduate from a recognized university.

Short Service Commission (Tech Male & Female):

 There are 50 vacancies per course twice a year with age requirement between 19 to 27 years and Engineering/B.  Arch, MSc Computer.

NCC Special (Male & Female):

Twice a year with 50 vacancies per course, NCC Special Age Criteria LLB/LLM with Bachelor’s Education qualification 50% aggregate marks and 19 with 2 years service in National Cadet Corps  is from 25 years.  NCC) with minimum ‘B’ grade in Senior Division Army ‘C’ Certificate Examination.

NCC ‘C’ certificate with minimum ‘B’ grade and university graduates having 50% aggregate marks in graduation examination are eligible to apply for short service commission through this entry.  Those studying in the third year are allowed to apply, provided they have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the first two years.  Such candidates will be required to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate, failing which their candidature will be cancelled. 

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree at the time of joining OTA or candidates studying in the third year should be able to produce the degree within 12 weeks from the date of commencement of training at OTA.  Such cadets are exempted from the written examination conducted by UPSC and are directly put through SSB interview followed by Medical Board.  Candidates meeting the qualitative requirements will have to apply through NCC Group Headquarters at the state level.  After screening by the respective Group Headquarters, the Directorate General of NCC forwards the applications of the eligible cadets to the Recruitment Directorate of Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defense (Army).

TGC Education (AEC):

Applicants age should be between 23 to 27 years for technical graduate courses for Army Education Corps admission and must have first or second class MA/MSc in notified subjects from recognized universities.

Universal Entry Scheme (UES):

 For this entry with 60 vacancies per course, candidates must be 19 to 25 years for final year and 18 to 24 years for pre-final year for students in engineering degree course.

TGC (Engineers):

Indian Army for candidates between 21 to 27 years of age with notified vacancies twice a year in Engineering/B.  Arch, MSc is BE/B.Tech in notified streams of Computer.

JAG (Male & Female):

 For Judge Advocate General admission applicants age should be between 21 to 27 years and Law Graduate (LLB) with 55% marks and registered with Bar Council of India/State.

Permanent Commission (Special List) (PC SL):

Under this entry, JCOs / NCOs / OR up to the age of 42 years and service of minimum 10 years, Senior School Certificate pass (Class 10+2 pattern) with qualification are eligible for commission after screening by SSB and Medical Board.  They are awarded PC (SL) after successful completion of four weeks orientation training at IMA.

Special Commissioned Officers (SCO) Scheme

Under this entry JCOs/NCOs/ or in the age group of 28-35 years in the age group of 142, Senior School Certificate pass (Class 10+2 pattern) with qualification, eligible for permanent commission after screening by SSB and Medical Board  Huh.  They have to undergo one year pre-commission training at OTA Gaya.  The rules for basic promotion and officiating promotion are the same as for regular officers.  These officers are employed in the units as Sub Unit Commanders/Quarter Masters and in various additional regimental employment appointments up to the rank of Major.  They retire at the age of 57 after serving for a period of about 20-25 years in the army.  This scheme not only improves the career prospects of the existing JCOs and ORs but also helps in filling the shortage of Assistant Cadre Officers in the Army to some extent.
